Heart rate changes. Breathing changes. Hormones rise and fall. Attention shifts. Energy fluctuates. We move between sleep and waking, activity and recovery, concentration and distraction, engagement and withdrawal.

These changes are not interruptions to a well-regulated system. They are part of how regulation works.

Regulation is the capacity to respond to changing internal and external conditions while maintaining (or returning toward) the ranges that allow us to function.

Regulation is the ongoing process of adjusting to changing conditions while maintaining or returning toward ranges that allow us to function.

It does not mean remaining calm, relaxed, or emotionally neutral all the time. Activation, excitement, focused effort, rest, and recovery are all useful states. Regulation involves being able to move between states as circumstances and needs change.

There is no single sign that applies to everyone. You might notice difficulty settling after a demanding experience, persistent restlessness, exhaustion, changes in sleep, difficulty concentrating, or a sense that your current level of activity does not match what you need.

Patterns can be more informative than individual moments. Paying attention to what tends to happen before, during, and after changes in your state can help you understand your own rhythms over time.

Not exactly. Calming can be useful when the body is highly activated, but regulation is broader than becoming calm. Sometimes an appropriate regulatory response involves resting or slowing down. At other times, it may involve movement, stimulation, engagement, or increased activity.

The goal is not to remain in one preferred state. It is to support flexibility between states.

Sleep and waking, hormone release, body temperature, alertness, digestion, activity, and recovery all change over time. Some of these patterns follow internal biological rhythms, while others respond to environmental signals such as light, temperature, meals, activity, and social routines.

No. Sleep is essential, but rest can also happen while awake.

Rest may involve reducing physical effort, cognitive demand, sensory stimulation, or other forms of activity. What feels restorative can depend on what has been demanding.

After prolonged physical activity, stillness may be restorative. After sitting and concentrating for hours, gentle movement or time outside may provide a more useful change of state.

Movement does not have to mean formal exercise.

Walking, stretching, gardening, dancing, playing, household activities, mobility work, yoga, exercise, sports, and simply getting up after sitting for a long period are all forms of movement.

Different forms and intensities of movement serve different purposes. The aim within Regulate is not to prescribe a particular exercise routine, but to become more aware of the relationship between movement, rest, and your own changing needs.

No. Tracking can be useful when you are curious about a recurring pattern, but it is not required. Simply beginning to notice when your energy rises or falls, when you naturally become tired, how you feel after different kinds of activity, or what seems to help you recover can provide useful information.

Tracking should be a tool for awareness, not another obligation.

These practices are supports, not solutions for every cause of discomfort or change in functioning.
